Pollution and transport
Transporting goods via ships, trucks and airplanes is a big pollution factor. It is therefore more environmentally friendly to buy products locally.
Example: Fruit transported from New Zealand to Iceland releases about five times its weight in carbon dioxide. Ship transport also releases a lot of carbon dioxide into the air and oil into the ocean. Therefore, buying locally produced food is without doubt most environmentally friendly, especially if the production is ecologically friendly e.g. organic.
