The quality of tires is a relative concept, but in terms of how they affect our health, studded tires are clearly the most harmful. Tests have shown that granulated tires have the same surface resistance/friction and equal stopping distance as studded tires in similar conditions. Good winter tires can also be just as good. A decision to buy studded tires should thus only be taken after careful consideration. The fact is that one of the main contributors to dust pollution is studded tires’ tearing up the asphalt.

Airborne dust can be extremely harmful for our lungs as it can cause asthma, allergies, bronchitis and even lung cancer. Another thing to be mindful of is that the contact patch of some tires does not contain PAH oils, though the inner part of all tires contain PAH oils.

When you need to get rid of old tires you can drop them off for recycling. There is a recycling fee for tires, which means that when tires are bought their recycling is already paid for. Old tires are often reused as rubber padding and swings.

Retreaded tires cannot be recommended for safety reasons.
