The Kitchen - Cleaning Products

Ecological cleaning products exist in a great variety and many of them are environmentally certified. It is often possible to do without cleaning products altogether and use microfiber cloths and natural chemicals such as vinegar and salt.

The overuse of cleaning products is extensive and expensive for the environment. Those chemicals do not simply disappear after using them. Rather they go down the sink, through the sewage pipes and enter the oceanic environment. There they continue to be active and to harm the ecosystem. Even though chemicals may decompose in the environment it takes time and some of the decomposing products can also be harmful.

It is safest to avoid the use of unneccesary chemicals and to use only  minimum amounts of what’s needed. Since water in Iceland is much softer than in the rest of Europe it is usually OK to half the the recommended use of detergents.

The inhabitants of the Earth use an enormous amount of toilet paper that has to decompose in nature. To choose environmentally friendly paper cloths is always better.

Veit það því miður ekki. Ég myndi spyrja Kollu grasalækni eða heilsubúðirnar.
