The Kitchen - Flowers

Flowers and plants are either wild or produced, i.e. grown with the sowing of seeds or by planting. Flowers that can be bought in Iceland are either wild, imported or produced in greenhouses here. Supervision with the import of seeds, living plants, flowers and fertilizer is handled by The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority. Its role is to prevent diseases or pests being imported into the country which could damage local horticulture. Organic seeds and organically grown plants can now be purchased from many local producers and the demand is rising.

Organic cultivation is based on the principle that neither medicines nor preventive chemicals are used in the soil, and  only organic fertilizer is applied. The environmental impact of such production is much more favorable than the impact of traditional agriculture. Tún, a member of IFOAM, certifies organic cultivation in Iceland both in whole areas and on certain farms.
