Many dyes, colorants and production processes involve the processing of the textiles with acid baths and various toxins,  some of which are  harmful to human health.  Also the production of textiles is often the source of serious environmental and health problems although some textiles are better than others.

Cotton is one of the most harmful raw materials because of extensive use of toxins during its growing season. One kg of cultivated cotton requires about one kg of toxins. However if you choose organically grown cotton then the use of toxins is almost forbidden and the use of toxic chemicals is kept to a minimum.

The Fair Trade labelling confirms that the product has been produced in an ethical and fair manner, without detrimental effects for the workers. Fair trade labelling also ensures that the workers get fair compensation for their work.

From the above it can be quite clear that it is definitely most environmentally friendly to buy organically and ecologically produced clothes, or clothes labelled with a certified environmental label. Production inside one’s own country has the advantage that the product has not been transported over long distances that makes such products more environmentally friendly than goods which have been transported over the globe with ships or in aeroplanes.
