Organic household waste is that which may be composted, such as vegetables, cereals, herbs, coffee grounds, eggshells, etc., while fish and meat leftovers should not be included with organic waste for composting. Organic food leftovers are collected in many communities and the plan is to extend the collection and use of this material. The use of composting bins saves an enormous amount of waste which otherwise would be discarded along with general household waste, resulting in transport and landfill costs. The compost makes for excellent fertilizer for the vegetable patch.
