Rowan is the most revered tree in Iceland. When it shows a lot of dark-red berries it portends a hard winter. Juniper is connected to the solstice and is also revered. Juniper branch burned in the house will clean the air. It is said that rowan used for boatbuilding brings bad luck unless juniper is also present in some form. Birch is a disinfectant used to whip the skin during a sauna. Pine is a recent arrival in Iceland and a rather sad tree that can absorb the sorrows of people walking through a pine forest.
