Pets form an important part of most families that keep them. They are good company and provide comfort. Besides, it is good for children to take care of animals but allergies toward certain animals are common as are allergies towards certain natural materials. Allergies, in fact, have been increasing during recent years, quite possibly because we are exposed to so many food additives and strong chemicals. Thus the stress on the immune system can be very high.

It is important that pets eat good and variable food. Factory made pet food is not always the best option. Inform yourself about what else you can give your pet. It is possible to buy organic pet food and environmentally friendly cat litter. The food which is sold here in Iceland is free from all toxic chemicals and other detrimental substances, provided it is legally imported. The Icelandic Food and Agricultural Authority supervises the import of pet food and ensures that it is healthy.

Most pets also need lots of exercise and company. Outdoor activity is important for all animals, not only for dogs and cats. Allow your pets to experience and inhale fresh air. You can always take pets onto the balcony or into the garden when the weather allows.

Unaddressed advertising mail includes newspapers and advertising material which is delivered to us without our consent. Each home receives around 176 kg of such mail every year. Those who do not want to receive it can now cancel it at the nearest post office and get a ticket to put on their mailbox. The ticket says that such advertising mail is not desired. Iceland Post however distributes only around 12% of advertising mail which is actually sent out. You can also call the National Registry (Þjóðskrá – tel. 569 2900) or send an e-mail to thjodskra@thjodskra.is (with name and social security number) and have a sign put next to your name. This sign means that it is not allowed to send you advertising mail.

Regarding other advertising mail which enters all homes in the country, it must be said that it is not easy to stop the flow of unwanted advertising mail that some people call junk mail from entering our mailbox. A special workgroup working on behalf of the Ministry of Environment is trying to find better solutions. Their aim is to minimise the amount of paper accumulating in this way and to introduce some kind of responsibility on behalf of the producer/polluter.

Regarding newspapers, you have to call the paper in question and ask that it not be put in your mailbox. Fréttablaðið, for instance, accepts this kind of cancellation, noting down your name and address, taking care that the paper does not enter your mailbox. Anyway, most papers can be read as Pdf documents on the internet.
